MotorMartin is rapidly becoming the go to site for classic auction news with both Coys of Kensington and Silverstone Auctions regularly featuring in the news posted here from MotorMartin Towers. A short time ago, MotorMartin spoke about the rarity of the 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STi that was to be featured in Silverstone Auction’s 20th May sale at http://motormartin.com/2016/05/12/news-rare-impreza-set-to-be-a-knockout-at-silverstone-auctions-may-sale/ and now comes one of MotorMartin’s favourite parts of any auction, finding out what the cars all sold for. Silverstone Auctions have therefore allowed MotorMartin access to their latest results.
Silverstone Auctions have shared with MotorMartin that, on their return to Silverstone circuit for the Sale on Friday 20th May, 70% of the best of breed classics on offer were sold, for a total sales value of £3.2million. Excellent work.
MotorMartin has been informed that four of Lamborghini’s finest went under the hammer at the home of British motorsport, including a rare and highly collectible 1983 Lamborghini Countach 5000 S, selling for £281,250 including premium. Sitting proudly opposite in the auction hall, a 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary edition sold for £241,875, while a 1988 Jalpa 3.5 Targa sold for £58,500. And if any of that exclusive group of collectors are reading, please get in contact so we can arrange a MotorMartin test of your superb motors.
Other Italian classics that caught the attention of buyers were a stunning 1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider by Touring. The elegant, rare, right-hand drive example had enjoyed extensive recommissioning by marque specialists and sold for a fantastic £82,688, more than £30,000 over its lower estimate.
Another incredibly rare right-hand drive model, a 1962 Maserati Sebring Series I, thought to be one of only 10 made, sold for £196,875, and a 1987 Ferraris Testarossa, beautifully maintained with just 12,425 miles from new, sold for £120,375.
Even more incredibly, with no less than eight telephone bidders joining huge demand in the room and from an international audience online, a 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL was successfully hammered away after a lengthy bidding war for £101,813, more than £30,000 over its lower estimate. Not only that, but a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda, a UK supplied right-hand drive example, sold for £60,750, more than £15,000 over its lower estimate.
Speaking just after the auction, Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, was pleased to report to MotorMartin on another successful sale when he shared that: “We’re delighted to return great prices to our vendors in our first sale of the year at Silverstone race circuit. Once again, I believe we put together a fantastic catalogue with a wide selection of high pedigree classics.” And I don’t think that anyone can say that you didn’t Nick.
With Japanese performance cars beginning to make headway in the classic market, a 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STi sold for £73,125. Not just any Impreza, the car is one of just 400 cars built and was supplied new to boxer Prince Naseem. With just 2,500 miles covered and unique details, the car was in high demand from collectors and sold for more than £13,000 over its lower estimate.
It comes as no surprise to MotorMartin that Aston Martin continue to prove in demand with collectors, especially as two beautiful Aston Martins sold for strong prices. A 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4, owned by the vendor for 40 years, sold for £151,875, and a 1986 Aston Martin V8 Volante sold for £137,250.
Silverstone Auctions have let it be known to MotorMartin that their next sale took place at the Classic Race Aarhus in Denmark, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May where nearly 100 cars went under the hammer at the prestigious motorsport festival.
Silverstone Auctions will return to the UK for three days’ of sales at the Silverstone Classic on 28th to 31st July. Entries are now being invited into these sales so those looking to sell a classic car with the support and expertise of Silverstone Auctions are encouraged to get in touch soon.
Nick shared with MotorMartin that: “It’s been a great start to the summer auction season and I look forward to welcoming customers old and new to our next sales very soon.” And MotorMartin can’t wait to keep you up to date with the cars and prices as they filter through to the news desk up in MotorMartin Towers.
